Crooks are using Twitter.

This is news.

Because crooks never used MySpace, or Facebook, or LiveJournal, or Instant Messenger, or even web-pages or e-mail or fax machines or phones before now.

Why, we went straight from the halcyon days of yore, where you had to be face to face with someone to scam them, straight to 140 characters or less of fake Viagra pills and porn sites that steal your credit card information.

I mean, okay, sure, it's informing the generally dense public that "hey, don't automatically trust every link you see on Twitter", but really... after all the scams of the past... after dodgy "Nigerian" princes offering millions of dollars to whoever checks the fax machine, up through "real live sexy girls just a click away" in IM, to all the crap and spam and more spam (sorry, lost the thesaurus) in e-mail and web-pages... if people haven't learned by now...

They're not going to learn.

A discourse on 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons [Jul. 6th, 2009|12:04 pm]
[Tags|]

Some time back (just over a year ago), I reviewed some "early release versions" of 4th edition D&D. Well, I've been in a 4th ed campaign for a few weeks now, so I can talk authoritatively about the mechanics and whatnot.

Of course, if you have no intention of ever playing 4th ed., you can skip this post now. Really, I won't mind. I'll just sit here in the dark. Alone.

......

Anyway....

Just to get something in place here, I have played D&D since nigh unto the beginning of the game. I played Basic D&D back when the classes were Fighter, Mage, Thief, Cleric, Elf, Dwarf and Halfling. (Yes, classes of Elf, Dwarf and Halfling.) I've played Advanced, 2nd ed., 3rd ed./3.5, and several other fantasy RPGs.

4th ed., strictly speaking, is less of an RPG then any previous edition of Dungeons & Dragons. I defend this by pointing out that RPG stands for Role-Playing Game. While you do create a character, and you generally do fill a role in your adventuring party, 4th edition, more then any previous edition, is more about tactical miniature gaming.

I suppose I should defend that point a little.

In previous editions of the game, especially up through 2nd edition, you didn't need to have a grid map to play. Sure, it helped. But you didn't need one. A good GM could get by without it, saying that "yes you were" or "no you weren't" close enough to bash the orc with your mace (or whatever). Sure, some things required knowing, more or less, where everything and everyone was, but it wasn't necessary to have it precise.

3rd edition changed a lot of that by having more tactical thinking being required, to move, to attack, to make attacks of opportunity, to worry about cover, concealment, range, 5-foot steps, and so forth. If you didn't understand any of that, don't worry. All it means is that is the balance of evidence supports you having a life.

To continue, though, 4th edition made it even more complicated. You cannot do anything other the simplest combats (and sometimes not even then) without having a grid map out. Every single power, whether it's a fighter's attacks, a wizard's spells, or whatever... they all require knowing where your character is in relation to everyone and everything else.

Now, if you're into tactical miniature combat, like those Star Fleet Battles weirdos, or those truly sad Warhammer people (I'm kidding), you'll have a great old time with this.

But you had better be used to combats taking a while. One of the combats we've had in the game so far was a party of five adventurers (a fighter, a swordmage, a sorcerer, a paladin, and a shaman) versus four giant spiders. That was a relatively simple combat.... and it took AN HOUR.

To be fair, it would have taken less time if I could stop fucking missing with my spells. And that's another big change. Every attack, regardless of course, requires an attack roll. There's no more "auto-hitting" Magic Missile. There's no more "you were in the area of effect, so suck it" spells. It is possible for wizards to hurl spells that can cover a 25 foot x 25 foot block... and not hit a single creature in it. This works for the players too, as sometimes the GM seems to have my luck, and can't hit the side of a barn with a shotgun... from the inside.

But the role-playing, is.... lacking. Well, that's not entirely true. A good group can make any system one worth playing (and role-playing). Except possibly FATAL. And Synnibarr. But 4th edition D&D seems to almost go out of it's way to exclude role-playing in an effort to appeal to the MMO crowd, which as we all know, has the attention span of a concussed mayfly.

Don't get me wrong... I'm having fun in the game I'm in. But it's because of the people I'm playing with, not necessarily the mechanics.

So the GM is describing the swampy valley we're about to walk down into, and he says, just at the limit of our vision is a black ziggurat (step-pyramid), where the, well, quest item (a sacred tablet for a tribe of shifters) is supposed to be. To get to it, we're going to have to slog through swamps, probably fight off lizardmen and undead.

I immediately pipe up with "Okay, so when we get there, I have a plan. We'll set the place on fire, and then we can just search through the ashes. But I have to warn you, this plan has some danger to it.

"Everyone knows that smoking ziggurats can kill you."

North Korea gets pissy about U.S. defending Hawaii.

No, seriously. They are.

From the article: "North Korea criticized the U.S. on Monday for positioning missile defense systems around Hawaii, calling the deployment part of a plot to attack the regime and saying it would bolster its nuclear arsenal in retaliation."

Seriously, what the fuck?

Okay, back in April, North Korea did a rocket test, and last month, they had an underground nuke test. When the U.N. put sanctions on them for this, the reaction from North Korea was appropriately insane: threats of war, and promises to expand their nuclear capabilities.

Never mind that most of the North Korean population is starving. Let's spend money on nukes!

As part of these U.N. sanctions, North Korea is banned from selling arms and weapons-related material to anyone. There is currently at least one ship, the Kang Nam, on the seas, suspected of carrying such items to Mynamar. But if anyone intercepts that ship, why, that's a declaration of war (again, according to North Korea).

So, let's review thus far:

Action: North Korea does shit the rest of the world thinks is bad.
Reaction: U.N. sanctions against North Korea.
Reaction to that: North Korea continues to act like heavily armed drunken rednecks.
Reaction to that: Concern by all other parties.

Latest action: North Korea plans to launch missile in direction of Hawaii.
Reaction: A ground-based missile intercept and radar system moved to Hawaii. (It's not like we're going to float the system over to NK on a rowboat.)
Reaction to that: North Korea continues to lose it's shit.

Seriously, unless China comes down on them like a ton of bricks, I don't see this ending well. China is about the only country who could really force North Korea to do anything, and even then, Great Leader (aka the current nutbag in charge, Kim Jong-il) may have either so completely lost his goddamned mind as to not care, or he might not even be really in charge any more, what with all the rumors of him having more then one stroke.)

I can fairly safely assume, though, that if the North Korea missile comes within really close range of Hawaii, that shit will get shot down. I don't see Obama or the U.S. military taking too many chances with that kind of thing.

Edit: (Possible update) Hrm... Coincidence?

One of the new items being added to Engineering is the "Goblin Welding Beam", which can be used to heal mechanical mobs, at a rate of 700 damage a second, for 10 seconds on a two-minute cooldown. It has 30 charges, and is completely worthless.

You see, if it's an Engineering-created mechanical mob, it doesn't last long enough to be healed, as they're typically only out for a minute, can easily be one-shotted, etc.

But, ahah, you can heal siege engines with it! That makes it useful, right?

WRONG!

Yay! We get a new item that sucks monkey ass!

For those who didn't hear, Fox "News" accidentally (on purpose) listed Governor Mark Sanford (R-SC) as a Democrat when they reported on his little trip of hiking the Appalachian Trail visiting his mistress in Argentina. They've done shit like this a handful of times before, "accidentally" listing politicans in the midst of scandal as Democrats, so it's no real surprise that the one person who apparently checks facts was out with the swine flu or whatever when the story hit.

And speaking of Mark Sanford.....

Mark Sanford was hiking the Appalachian Trail. No, wait, he was in Argentina. Yeah, Argentina, that's it.

Regardless of where the fuck he was, he left without telling anyone where he was going. His wife didn't know. His kids didn't know. The Lieutenant Governor didn't know. Hell, his bodyguards didn't know.

And not only did he not tell anyone where he was going, he didn't let tell the Lt. Governor that he was taking off, so there was no temporary transfer of power. Thankfully, there were no emergencies that might have required the decision-making powers, such as they are, of the Governor.

This is, after all, the same man, who wanted to refuse $700 million in federal aid because it was part of Obama's stimulus plan. That money was only going (in part) to teachers and education. But, hell, this is South Carolina! The last thing this state obviously needs more of is smart people.

I can only hope his little jaunt to wherever-the-fuck comes back to haunt him again and again so that any hopes for a Presidential run in 2012 end in misery for him.

Dear Iranian election authority, isn't it true that in dozens of cities in Iran, the total number of votes received exceeds the number of registered voters in those cities?

Iranian election authority: Umm.. yeah. But those votes didn't noticeably influence the overall results.

But aren't those still voting irregularities?

No, not for fucking off or anything... what with that aforementioned economy, any merit raises might be pushed back to next March. So... apparently, one of the upcoming additions to the Argent Tournament is going to be an improved Argent Squire. He can be used, once every 8 hours as a mailbox, a vendor, and as remote bank access.

So... Engineering has MOLL-E, which, every 8 hours, can be used as a mailbox. You have to be an Engineer to use it. Can it grant remote bank access? WHY NO. We've only been inquiring about Engineering getting remote bank access for, oh, three or four years. Obviously, it was too powerful to give to Engineers, so everyone will be able to get it instead.

And because the devs haven't kicked us while we're down enough yet, a month (roughly) ago, we were told "Good things were coming."

Today, one of the Blue posters (Blizzard employees) posted that they can't actually tell us what the good things are, when they are coming, or the time-frame on when they can tell us.

What a shock, I'm bored [Jun. 1st, 2009|01:57 am]
[Tags|, ]

Pretty much done with work for the night. Only one thing I could work on, and we kind of want to talk to the customer first before running it. I did do all the major set-up on the order, so on the off chance that I am making all the correct assumptions on the order, it's an hour's worth of printing and some small amount of finishing work.

The WoW forums are not readable. I mean, beyond the normal trolling, whining and stupidity... all the links and text are showing up very oddly on the work computers (at least in IE, and I cannot even run Firefox as a remote process), and I left other reading material at home. Quite by accident, of course. I had to go back upstairs to grab an umbrella, and I left the book I was bringing in.

I'm blaming early onset Alzheimer's.

However, I was reminded yesterday that the 10th anniversary of one of my favorite D&D characters had occured. 10 years ago, last Saturday, was when I joined the "Company of Dawn" campaign, bringing in my Wizard (Wu-jen kit from 2nd ed.) Haruhiko. Much fun was had with [info]mithras's character, aptly named Mithras, [info]jimcyl's characters (first a Lizardman swooshbuckler, who got permanently polymorphed into an elf, and then a humanoid cat thing which was a monk), and some other friends (who I believe are not on LJ) a human paladin (with a touch of silver dragon blood) named Serin, a "reformed" drow named Eldrikor, and an Athasian half-giant who, although he later died, still managed to be part of the adventuring party as a penitant (I think that's what it was called...)

This was mildly important because I'm going to be creating a new character for a 4th ed. game that will start in the next couple of weeks. I'm leaning heavily towards a Tiefling Warlock, but that may change after I look at some of the other material. The game is being run by the same guy who ran the "Company of Dawn" game, and it's taking place about 125 years later in roughly the same setting (Planescape). Apparently, my old wizard Haruhiko is still going to be around, living on his own little demi-plane.
