SC Governor Sanford faces 37 charges of breaking state ethics laws.
Now, in all honesty, some of this is piddly shit. You see, there's a state law that traveling government personnel (the Governor included) must try to get the lowest-cost option. So yeah, Sanford flew first class a few times when he could or should have flown coach.
Big whoopty fucking do.
However, he also used state-owned aircraft for political and personal events. (Okay, side note: If the Governor is traveling to say, Charleston, on a state-owned plane for an event that he is supposed to be at, that's one thing. If he's traveling to Charleston on a state-owned plane to support a candidate from his party for some event, that's an entirely different thing. And it's a no-no.)
One of the flights he took for personally or political reasons was to a birthday party for a campaign contributor in Aiken. Now, I grew up in Aiken. It's an hour drive from Columbia to Aiken. So, why the plane ride? I mean really?
Again, that's probably more piddly shit.
What they're going to hang him on are either the improper reimbursements out of campaign money OR the fact that he used some of those state-paid first class tickets to visit his mistress in Argentina.
Now, I don't know if the trip mentioned was the one that got this whole thing in the news (back when he was ostensibly hiking the Appalachian Trail), but it really doesn't matter. He fucked off (quite possibly literally) on the taxpayer's dime for an affair.
Of course, the Republican party has been a lot quieter about this then they should have been, because hey, he's one of own. They're not nearly the pack of baying wolves that they were when Clinton was getting a knob shine in the Oval Office. But then, Clinton didn't fly Air Force One out to Hooter's for some ribs and pussy.
Still, I fully expect our state legislature to make a complete mess of this. These are the same asshole who took years to get rid of the mini-bottle law in this state and debated more about whether tattoos should be illegal then they did about predatory payday lending. |

For anyone using Chrome (the browser), is there a way to get the fucking tabs to be under the address bar?
And for that matter, where in the name of fuck are the normal setting controls so it will goddamn remember the settings I like instead of resetting them to something else every damn time I launch it? |

| So, tis Thanksgiving week already. |
[Nov. 23rd, 2009|02:04 am] |
I'll need to make sure my "emergency pants" are clean for Turkey Day.
Other then that, not a lot to do this week. I only work three days this week, tonight (right now) being one of them, and I have six hours of "not a whole lot to do" going on.
Strike that. I have six hours of "nothing to do" going on.
Of course, I fully expect a few more customers tonight. I've already had a few students in, because there's nothing professors like more then having a project due before Thanksgiving break. (Side note: Dear students, this habit of attaching a pound of keys/various other crap to your USB drive? Stop that.)
And I find myself once again wishing I could draw for shit. I have this silly image in my head of "Where were you when the aliens invaded?" where a stereotypical alien saucer is floating above a construction site, while a panicked man looks out of a Port-O-San. |

Sarah Palin leaves hundreds of fans in the lurch. (link ganked from flemco)
Okay, this is a woman who quit being Governor of Alaska 18 months early, and people are shocked that she didn't stick around to sign all the books she was supposed to? Guys, wake up and smell the coffee. She's not a maverick. She's just like every other U.S. politician. (Okay, that's hardly fair. Some U.S. politicians actually have foreign relations experience.)
You know, I actually do feel sorry for some of these people though. It's not fun when your heroes disappoint you.
.......
bwahahahahahaha
Okay, sorry, could only be a nice guy for so long. Back to normal now. |

There appears to be something going on at the statehouse grounds. I've seen several groups of people walking there carrying signs or posterboards.
Considering that the U.S. Senate is supposed to be voting today on the health care bill, I have my suspicions. I'm going to have to go check this out.
Edit: It turns out it's not a protest, but a demonstration for "Green Jobs". Considering that unemployment here in South Carolina is at 12%, I think we'd be happy if any jobs were created here. |

You have to love the tone of this article.
The movement’s guiding theme, Dianetics, leaves a sour taste in the mouth of rationalists, and sounds for many, more like something that diabetics should avoid. Now it seems the newish Australian prime minister has come to a similar conclusion. |

For those who play City of Heroes, they recently released the Martial Arts Super-Booster. It gives new costume options, costume change emotes, and a power called "Ninja Run", which when activated, lets you run faster and jump higher.
Of course, when this was pointed out to me and several friends, we decided to create a villain group to celebrate this. You can find "Rival Ninja Clan" villain-side, on the Virtue server. |

So, I use Photoshop at work. There's not a week that goes by where I'm not doing minor edits to remove redeye from a picture, or blocking out and editing text, or other relatively minor edits. I've used different filters to create customized artwork, or enhance something for a customer. All through that, I thought I wasn't too bad at using Photoshop. I'm not great at it, but I thought I had a decent level of skill.
Then, for lack of anything else to do tonight, I watched a bit of the live-streamed coloring of "Looking for Group" by Ryan Sohmer and Lar deSouza. (Well, obviously, it's Lar doing the coloring, not Ryan, but you see what I mean.)
Goddamn, this guy is good. I mean spooky good. Watching him work shows that (a) he knows his shit and (b) he's fast at it without losing any quality. |

Caffeinated alcohol? What a wonderful (and possibly illegal) idea!
Okay, the FDA is looking into oh, about 30 products of the "caffeinated alcohol" variety, but I have to wonder.... WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT THIS WAS A BRIGHT IDEA?
What, did some marketing weenie go "Hey, we sell booze. But you know, getting hammered, it just isn't enough. Let's add something that will make people twitchy as well. That will sell well to our trendy young-adult audience!"
Here's one variety of it...

It's Red Bull with booze! It's vodka and Jolt cola! It's... pretty fucked up. |

| More of "It Came From The D&D Game" |
[Nov. 13th, 2009|09:02 am] |
So, last night, being Thursday, was the D&D game. Off-topic conversation and bad puns were rampant. In fact, I made a point of noting that Deec's humor was up to par, in that his puns were truly terrible (not the Spider Robinson "hold your nose and flee into the night" terrible. No, just the "man, that pun is bad" kind of terrible.)
But we keep Deec around for other reasons, like for his character to absorb 5 critical hits in one night.
Anyway, after I made numerous comments about other people's sense of humor (as in their sense of telling jokes), I could feel the backlash heading my way. I could tell that the next joke I told, if it did not get them all, would have the responses that my humor wasn't much better.
So naturally, the Gods of Laughter came to my rescue.
In the middle of a fight versus various creatures, including a gibbering mouther (an ooze creature covered in mouths, for those who don't know), I said, "What is difficult terrain for an ooze anyway? A colander?"
The game stopped. The players and GM paused.
And then they all started laughing.
Winner, and still champion: Me. |

| Good call by the judge |
[Nov. 10th, 2009|01:01 pm] |
Federal Judge nixes South Carolina's Christian imagery license tags.
For the record, the reason there was such a fuss over these things is that the South Carolina state legislature passed a bill to create the new license tags. Which is a violation of church and state. If it had been a private group doing it, there would have been no problem. (State law allows private groups to create specialty plates as long as they first collect either a $4,000 deposit or 400 prepaid orders.) |

I've been working at the same place for nine years now, and the entire time, we've had a soda machine at work. Well, not the same soda machine for the entire nine years, but we've had one continuously. For most of that time, sodas (20 oz. name brand) had been $1 apiece. Earlier this year, it went up to $1.25. Hey, couldn't last forever, right?
Sometime between last Wednesday and Sunday, they went up again to $1.50 apiece.
*sigh*
Now, the company I work for has little control over the machine. It's owned, operated and maintained by Pepsi. About the only thing we can control (and only slightly) is what is stocked in there. It's mostly because of me that there's two Dr Pepper trays in the machine.
But I can buy Dr Pepper at three places within walking distance of work, where all three are on the way to work, for cheaper then this.
Or, and this might just be crazy talk, this could be the incentive to stop drinking sodas at work. |

GOP lawmaker says Dems put agenda ahead of country
As opposed to what the Republicans are doing, which is.... nothing.
I love this quote, though: "A top House Republican says passage of the health care bill shows that Democrats didn't get the message from voters last week and in summer town-hall meetings."
Yeah, those town-hall meetings... which were largely astroturfed. And let's not forget the lies the Republicans have spread about "socialized medicine", including the bullshit about how Stephen Hawking would be dead if he had to rely on NHS. (Which, shockingly, he has for decades, and he's still alive.) |

House Democrats who voted against the health care bill.
It also lists how much they won their last election by, what percentage of non-insured elderly there are in their districts, and some stats on how their district voted in the last presidential election.
Side note: One (and only one) Republican broke ranks in the House to vote for the health care bill. His name is Anh Cao (R-LA), and he's probably not your typical Republican. |

Lindsay Graham (R-SC), John McCain (R-AZ), and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) are STILL douchebags.
Short version: "WAAAHHH! We don't want the government to spend any money on actually having trials for the people still locked up at Gitmo! We're douchebags who think they should be held for the rest of their lives without being charged!"
On the other side, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Defense Secretary Robert Gates say that there should be the option of military commissions or civilian courts for the detainees.
Well, that's hardly the short version.... |

Gitmo detainees possibly being moved to South Carolina, so of course, one of our state politicians is losing his fucking mind.
Bobby Harrell, the SC Speaker of the House, doesn't like the idea of moving Gitmo detainees to the North Charleston Naval Brig. Apparently, he's all for protecting SC citizens.
Because, as we all know, the Naval Brig is a large cardboard box with the word "jail" written in crayon on the side, and the security there is a man actually named Gomer Pyle.
Dear Mr. Harrell:
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Obama is not talking about releasing Gitmo detainees on the streets of South Carolina with bus fare and an IED. Get a fucking handle on reality, you posturing douchebag. |
